Description
The interface-status-log documents the real-time state changes of network interfaces on a system. It logs events like a network adapter coming online or going offline, gaining or losing an IP address, changing speed or duplex mode, or switching between Wi-Fi access points.
This log is especially helpful for diagnosing physical connectivity problems—like loose Ethernet cables, failing network cards, or malfunctioning switches. It also helps detect intermittent issues that don’t show up in regular ping or route tests but are evident through rapid interface flapping (repeated up/down cycles).
Each log entry typically includes the interface name, event type (e.g., LINK UP, IP ADDED, MTU CHANGED), time of occurrence, and optionally the MAC address, link speed, and duplex setting. Changes triggered by DHCP leases or user/network manager actions are also recorded.
In server environments, sudden interface shutdowns can be tied to power-saving modes, virtual machine migrations, or driver updates. In mobile or laptop devices, these logs are used to understand how roaming or suspend-resume cycles impact connectivity.
For high-availability systems, interface-status-log entries can trigger failover actions—like switching to backup interfaces, initiating routing changes, or alerting administrators of potential outages. This log is critical in network resilience and diagnostics.
