Description
The interface-map configuration file plays a key role in ensuring consistent and predictable naming of network interfaces. On systems with multiple network interfaces or on virtualized environments, network interfaces may change names on reboot depending on the detection order by the kernel. This can create confusion or even break network automation if interface names are not consistent.
This file resolves the issue by allowing interfaces to be mapped directly to their unique hardware MAC addresses or to persistent device paths. This mapping ensures that eth0 always refers to the same physical or virtual interface regardless of system changes or hardware reordering. Common use cases include servers with bonded interfaces, virtual machines that boot from snapshots, or embedded Linux systems with custom NICs.
In addition to MAC address mapping, interface-map can also define custom names like lan0, wan0, or uplink, improving clarity in configuration files and scripts. This is especially helpful in routers and gateways where interface roles are distinct.
By stabilizing interface names, interface-map enhances network reliability, reduces troubleshooting time, and forms the backbone for scripting or automation in infrastructure as code (IaC) scenarios.
